In opening heritage sites to the public, we need to strike the right balance between visitor safety and sensitivity to the historic fabric. For instance, putting a modern, bright walkway into a castle dungeon does not give the building, or visitors, the respect they deserve. Reducing risk and maximising visitor enjoyment are not mutually exclusive ambitions.
